Imaging Utilization

Imaging utilization programs are designed to optimize appropriate use of radiologic procedures and minimize unnecessary radiation exposure.

Currently it is estimated that approximately 22-25% of imaging studies are not indicated.  RAF is a pioneer in inpatient imaging utilization and one of the first groups to implement a clinical decision support system (CDSS). This technology reduces inappropriate and redundant imaging in order to increase efficiency while decreasing costs and length of stay. This translates into better patient care as well as increased satisfaction from both patients and hospital.

A Robust Outpatient Imaging Program

Imaging utilization programs can be more complex in the outpatient setting. In this situation, pre-authorization is typically required and reimbursement is limited to the specific exam ordered by the referring physician. Any change requires a new prescription and authorization. Nonetheless, RAF has taken the initiative to implement a robust imaging utilization program at their outpatient facilities. For example, at Tower Radiology, a dedicated staff member works with authorization and scheduling to review all CT scans ordered. Through a specific set of protocols established by RAF, inappropriate scans are flagged and the ordering physician’s office is contacted and educated about ordering the most appropriate study based on ACR criteria. As a result, a more accurate diagnosis can be accomplished via a more cost-effective exam. Our radiologists devote significant resources to educating our staff on best practices for selecting imaging modalities, defining protocols and reporting results.
